What is Populism?
•A broad concept: right wing populism to left wing populism
•Populism generally expresses the conflict between the majority of the people who are “out of power” versus the small but powerful elites (Barbara Weijnert2014: 146). Competition is a response to the perpetuating social divisiveness between the small elites and the marginalized majority.
•CasMudde: defines populism as “an ideology that considers society to be ultimately separated into two homogenous and antagonistic groups, ‘the pure people’ versus the corrupt elite, and which argues that politics should be an expression of the general will of the people” (2017: 3).

Three Keywords
•People: poor, marginalized, homogenous, authentic or pure
•The Elites: powerful, corrupt, immoral
•General will –linked to the poeple.;
•Populistic slogan: “we are the only group capable of representing the true general will of the people”
•Basic character of populist: anti-pluralist and being critical of elites
